When tuning your harmonica there will arise a need to plink the reed to check that the reed vibrates free and without interference from the sides of the reed gap of foreign matter or burs etc.
the fact that by removing the slightest amount of brass from a reed can dramatically alter the note, it stands to reason that by plinking the reed with a metal object there is the possibility of scratching the reed, thus a scratch is the result of the removal of material from the surface.
hereto the tool selected to plink must be soft enough not to effect the reed other than to cause the reed to vibrate giving an indication that it is free and tuned.
